Collaborative Robots, or Cobots, are making headway into a variety of industries.

These robots are specially designed to work with human operators and contain built-in safety features that allow for optimal performance. In early 2017 alone, 27,294 robots were placed on order at a total cost of approximately $1.47 billion.

According to BIS Research, by 2021 the collaborative-robot market is expected to grow to approximately 150,000 units costing $2 billion.[1] Although the popularity of robotics is on the rise, many feel that they will hinder the human workforce.

However, statistics show this may not be the case. Over a seven-year period from 2010 to 2016, for example, 136,748 robots were purchased in the US. During that same period manufacturing employment increased by 894,000 while the employment rate decreased from 9.8% in 2010 to 4.7% in 2016.

Robotics are also expanding from manufacturing and moving into industries like medicine, biology and security.

The future appears bright for those who wish to pursue a career in robotic engineering.
