Lawmakers in the U.K. are looking to model their tax on plastic bags, but this time for disposable coffee cups. Reports show 2.5 billion disposable cups are littered annually in Britain alone. A waterproof lining in most cups keeps them from being recycled, a detail proponents of the law point to often. Use of plastic bags has declined 80% since the tax, and proponents say human nature will do the same for cups. As McDonald’s announces all of its packaging will be recycled materials by 2025, businesses are looking to follow suit.
