High above the ground, with a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding neighborhood, might seem like a pleasant place to be for Jose Sandoval. But with the Dallas-Fort Worth area broiling under triple-digit temperatures, roofing, it turns out, isn’t just a backbreaking exercise: It’s life in a barbecue pit.

“It’s harder when it’s high up, and hot like this,” said Sandoval, overseeing a crew of five roofers working in Coppell for Farmers Branch-based American Dream Roofing.
