Utilities companies tackling digital transformation discover how specialized expertise turns complex data migration from a costly risk into a streamlined compet

In the rapidly evolving utilities industry, the transition towards modern and efficient data management systems is fraught with challenges, yet essential for scalability and sustainability. As companies strive for modernization, data migration emerges as a critical yet complex task, highlighted by the risk of data loss, the need for stakeholder engagement, and the potential for increased costs and time expenditures.

The utilities sector's push towards clean energy and digital transformation underscores the importance of effective data management strategies. According to insights from Deloitte, this transition not only supports the industry's growth but also aligns with global sustainability goals, propelling companies towards adopting artificial intelligence and other digital solutions to navigate these challenges.

Within this context, the expertise of specialized data migration and management firms becomes invaluable. MarketScale was on the show floor of DISTRIBUTECH 2024, where the focus was on overcoming the data hurdles in the utility sector. Glen Gagnon, the Head of Delivery for Regulated Industries and Canada at Syniti along with Brad Helman, the Vice President of Strategic Industries at Syniti shares their insights into navigating these complexities.

Glen's Thoughts

"Yeah, so we're here at Distributech to showcase data migration, Syniti, and talk about data challenges in the utilities industry."

Brad's Thoughts

"So some of the challenges that customers face when they're deciding how to implement their new system is do you partner with an SI implementation partner, and especially looking at the data track specifically. One of the challenges that they see is that they might not have their hands around how the data actually impacts their process. One of the biggest things that our customers experience is pain through their data migrations and data quality challenges is because they don't start early enough with data."

Glen's Thoughts

"You know, we're pure-play data, and that's all we do. We live and breathe it every day. We actually had a marketing campaign recently that says you could go with do-it-yourself electrician or plumbing, but you're probably not going to get perfect results. It's probably going to cost a lot more. You know, trust the expert because we've done this thousands of times."

Brad's Thoughts

"Some of the biggest challenges our customers face around starting data is understanding how much data that they actually have. Another consideration is the data quality challenges that reside in the data, making sure we cleanse those early to give the business plenty of time to get that data ready for their new system."

Glen's Thoughts

"We've already gathered the knowledge and defined the best practices and also come with leading software to help make sure that, you know, everybody can be efficient."
