Being digitally literate is quite possibly one of the most valuable skills a young child can have in the 21st Century. However, when most people say “digital literacy,” they are mostly referring to the software side of computers, and not the hardware. Piper, an organization set on getting children to work with computers, is working to change that notion and get children more focused on computer hardware as well as software, another holistic push to get students excited about STEM fields.

Joining us on today’s EdTech Podcast is Joel Sadler, Founder of Piper. “Anyone Can Make Anything,” Sadler said, and this mentality is what’s motivated him to put hardware in the hands of students. Sadler discusses the importance of learning computer hardware in regards to digital literacy, computer coding as language, and how teachers and schools are implementing more mandatory and comprehensive courses about computers.
